Derrick’s Story
Derrick Douglass is a sculptor and graphic designer whose work bridges both the physical and digital worlds. He is pursuing an associate degree in Sculpture from Montgomery College’s School of Art & Design (expected 2026) and previously completed an MBA in Marketing and a BS in Computer Science.
Derrick’s prior experience in web, graphic, and branding design informs his current design and fabrication practice. His work has been exhibited at Montgomery College’s King Street Gallery and published in The Sligo Journal. He brings a strategic and technical mindset to creative collaboration and public-facing design.
When he’s not in the studio, he enjoys traveling and spending time with family and friends, including his sixteen nieces and nephews. Derrick can often be found at his local coffee shop with a good cup of joe, sketching or working through ideas in his notebook.

Artist Statement
My art practice reflects traditional African imagery and urban grit themes that converse through my characters, reflecting my effort to find a lineage with ancestors who transformed scarcity into culture. By reimagining materials found in the trash, I transform what once felt disposable—objects and, symbolically, parts of myself—into something proud, soulful, and alive. This transformation is what drives my work: turning neglect into beauty and isolation into connection.
I use materials already charged with energy, color, and attitude
—objects that have lived before I touch them. Every piece begins with that built-in history. My sculptural process is additive, creating figures and objects through the intentional layering of mixed materials. Wood, metal, and found materials become characters in conversation, balanced through design elements like line, rhythm, and proportion.
